Succulent perennial to 10 cm high, densely branched to form tufted clumps to 25 cm in diam.; roots fibrous

Branches to 7 cm long, terete, 6–12 mm thick, with very shallow rounded tubercles 7–12 mm apart, in 5 longitudinal series separated by shallow sinuate grooves

Spine-shields quite separate, oblong-obovate, 2.5–6 x 1.5–2.5 mm; spines 2–26 mm long, slender, flexible; prickles 1–4.5 mm long
