Type
Type: Zambia, Northern Province, Fwambo, Carson 38 (K!, holo.)
Morphology General Habit
Annual herb, 0.5–1 m tall, slightly woody near base
Morphology Stem
Stems erect, quadrangular, pubescent with short eglandular hairs and red sessile glands, indumentum on younger stems and immediately below inflorescence more densely pubescent with short eglandular hairs and with red sessile glands
Morphology Leaves
Leaves opposite but appearing whorled due to many shoots arising from axils, subsessile; blades very narrowly elliptic to narrowly oblanceolate, 9–22 × 3–9 mm, then narrowly attenuate down the petiole to the stem for 2–17 mm, with small serrations in the upper half, apex acute, pubescent with short eglandular hairs, with a dense covering of yellow sessile glands on the upper surface and red sessile glands beneath
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescence dense, when in flower forming a narrow conical shape, in fruit, 27–35 × 11–16 mm; bracts subtending entire inflorescence ± linear, 3–8 mm long, acute, deflexed, indumentum as leaves, persistent through flowering stage; bracts subtending single flowers linear, ± 2 mm long, pubescent with short eglandular hairs, ciliate
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Calyx with tube ± 0.5 mm long at anthesis, outer surface with eglandular hairs, clear and red sessile glands, inner surface with 0.5 mm long rounded-triangular scales present on the inner surface of the tube between calyx lobes; lobes 5, subulate, 1–1.5 mm long, with clear sessile glands and eglandular hairs; fruiting calyx with tube ± 2.5 mm long, ventrally gibbous, lobes patent to the tube, not lengthening
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Corolla pale blue, ± 5 mm long; tube with eglandular hairs and clear and red sessile glands, very narrow and parallel-sided for 1.5 mm, then curving sharply downwards and broadening for ± 1.5 mm before opening into two lips; posterior lip ± equal in length to anterior, 1.5–2 mm long, the backs of lobes with a denser covering of eglandular hairs and clear and red sessile glands; anterior lip 1.5–2 mm long, 0.5–1 mm deep, with a denser covering of eglandular hairs and clear and red sessile glands on the front of lip
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens
Stamens connate for ± 0.5 mm, exserted but sometimes covered by posterior lip, the anterior pair not reaching the end of the lip
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Nutlets ± 1 mm long.
Ecology
Grassland; 1500–2250 m
Conservation
Said by Bullock on his collection No. 3938 (cited above) to be common in grassland throughout Ufipa District: but overall distribution known only extends a little way beyond this area into Zambia.
Note
Pycnostachys verticillata is a distinctive, apparently annual herb with a tiny inflorescence. It is closely related to P. dewildemaniana but it differs by its smaller, narrowly elliptic to narrowly oblanceolate leaves, and its shorter calyx lobes. Its calyx tube and lobes also lack glandular hairs or longer eglandular hairs. The upper leaf surface has numerous yellow sessile glands, presumably prompting comments such as ‘sticky herb’ on specimen labels (e.g. Bidgood et al. 3839).
