Type
Type: Malawi, between Khondowe and Karonga, Whyte 376 (K!, holo.)
Morphology General Habit
Aromatic perennial herb, 0.2–0.6 m tall, arising from a tuberous root system with tubers cylindrical, 4 × 0.5 cm
Morphology Stem
Stems erect or ascending, quadrangular, usually branched, pubescent to villose with variously orientated short hairs and scattered longer hairs, with hairs generally shorter on the inflorescence axis and becoming glandular, and with red sessile glands
Morphology Leaves
Leaves ascending, petiolate, with clusters of young leaves in axils; blades irregularly pinnatifid with ± linear divisions, 1–1.5(–2) × 0.5–1(–1.5) cm, laciniate to serrate, base attenuate, pubescent, with reddish glands; petiole 5–8(–10) mm long
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescence lax with 10–26-flowered verticils up to 20 mm apart; cymes shortly pedunculate with peduncles 1–3 mm long, 5–13-flowered with lateral cincinni up to 10 mm long; bracts erect above, cucullate, ovate, 2–5 mm long, deciduous; pedicels (2–)4–6 mm long
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Calyx 1–2 mm long, pubescent, with red sessile glands; fruiting calyx 5 mm long, tubular, slightly curved with pedicel attached excentrically behind the posterior lip; throat truncate; posterior lip obovate, curving upwards, obtuse to rounded at apex, not or shortly decurrent; lateral lobes rounded, oblong; median lobes of anterior lip linear, 3–4 mm long with teeth 1 mm long
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Corolla white to bluish purple, (7–)8–12 mm long, pubescent on lobes, with red sessile glands; tube 4–6 long, strongly sigmoid, sigmoid part of tube largely concealed by calyx, posterior lip erect, shorter than anterior; anterior lip (3–)5–6 mm long, deeply cucullate enclosing stamens
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens
Staminal filaments fused
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Nutlets brown, speckled reddish, ovoid, 1 mm long, producing a small amount of mucilage when wet
Figures
Fig 39: 9, p 238 & 56: 1–5, p 334
Ecology
Grassland, sometimes in rocky areas; 2100–2700 m
Conservation
Least concern; fairly commonly collected
Note
Closely related to P. sigmoideus but differing in the branched habit, pinnatifid leaves, clusters of young leaves in leaf axils and more gibbous corolla with a shorter, concealed sigmoid portion. In P. schizophyllus the ascending parallel-sided part of the tube is subequal to the calyx, in P.sigmoideus it exceeds the calyx posterior lip
