Type
Typus: Tanzania, Ufipa District: Nkansi, 15 km on Kipili–Namanyere road, Bidgood, Mbago & Vollesen 2661 (K!, holo. (sheet 2) K (sheet 1), BR, C, DSM, EA, NHT, UPS, WAG, iso.)
Morphology General Habit
Perennial aromatic suffrutex with 1 or 2 stems arising from a small ellipsoid vertical tuber 3–4 × 0.5–1 cm, 0.6 m tall, not reported as aromatic
Morphology Stem
Stems erect, quadrangular, branching in the inflorescence, purplish above, puberulent below with short retrose hairs, shortly pubescent above, with yellowish sessile glands
Morphology Leaves
Leaves ascending to erect, sessile, clasping stem; blades linear, remotely serrate or subentire, 5–8 × 0.5–1 cm, apex acute attenuate, base truncate, sparsely pubescent, glandular-punctate with pale glands
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescence lax with (3–)6-flowered verticils 5–15 mm apart, with bracts subtending (1–)3-flowered, sessile cymes; bracts ovate, 1–4 mm long; pedicels 4–6 mm long
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Calyx 3 mm long, purplish above, pubescent with glandular hairs and numerous pale sessile glands; fruiting calyx 6–8 mm long, spreading, tubular with pedicel attaching centrally at base of calyx; throat truncate; posterior lip elliptic, shortly decurrent, curving upwards; lobes of anterior lip lanceolate, median lobes much longer than lateral and becoming subulate at apex
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Corolla very pale pink, 12–16 mm long, sparsely pubescent with glandular and eglandular hairs and with pale sessile glands; tube 7–8 long, sigmoid; posterior lip equal to anterior lip, vertical or slightly reflexed; anterior lip 5–8 mm long, slightly ascending, shallowly cucullate, enclosing stamens, not pubescent within, weakly frilled at apex
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens
Staminal filaments free
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Nutlets dark brown with red speckles, broadly ovoid, 1.5 mm long, ± smooth, producing a small amount of mucilage
Ecology
Brachystegia woodland on grey, sandy soil; 850 m
Conservation
Known only from the type collection
Note
Similar to P. goetzei, but differing in having a narrower corolla tube, less pubescent stem, longer, more linear leaves with a strongly clasping leaf base, pale gland dots, shorter, more delicate fruiting calyx, and less deeply cucullate anterior corolla lip which lacks hairs within. Differs from P. stenophyllus by having an ellipsoid tuber, pale sessile glands, linear leaves and a glabrous corolla lip. Recent unpublished molecular work (M. Mwanyambo pers. comm.) suggests this species belongs in the ‘Coleus’ clade, rather than being allied to P. goetzii in the ‘Plectranthus’ clade. The pale sessile glands and tuber shape may relate this species to P. kapatensis.
