General Description
LEAVES all of one type, strongly hastate, posterior lobes widely divergent, acute, usually with primary and main lateral veins slightly to heavily silver-grey, cream or yellowish green, more rarely blade marked with irregular black-purple spots or cloudy silver-grey blotches, or a combination of any of these, rarely plain green. Petiole pale to mid-green. Peduncle pale to mid-green. Spathe-limb pale greenish white to pale yellowish white. Spathe-tube interior greenish white, rarely stained purple apically. Spadix-appendix dark yellow. Staminodes in 4 or 5 whorls, bases verrucate. Plant beginning growth in early autumn.
Distribution
N Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria) most of Europe south of the Netherlands (possibly native in the UK), W and N Turkey, Iraq (introduced with crops?). Naturalised in Argentina (Forziano, Crisci & Delucchi, 1991).
Phenology
Flowering mid-May to mid-June, occasionally extending into early July.
Habitat
Open woodland, hedgerows, open scrub, dry pasture, maquis.
