    Habit
    Annual; stem erect, simple or branched from near the base, angular, with the angles narrowly winged, up to 20 cm. tall (in West Africa, usually 5–10 cm. in East Africa).

    Leaves alternate, obovate-spathulate, shortly petiolate; petiole 2–5 mm. long; lamina up to 15 × 10 mm.
    Flowers
    Flowers solitary, axillary, numerous throughout the length of the stem and branches.
    Pedicel
    Pedicels filiform, ascending at anthesis, spreading in fruit, up to 20 mm. long.
    Calyx
    Calyx-segments 5 or 4, lanceolate, acuminate, about 2 mm. long.
    Corolla
    Corolla white, persistent and reddish in fruit; lobes 5 or 4, oblong, rounded or sub-acute, sometimes very obscurely denticulate, 3-nerved, 1–1.5 mm. long.
    Stamens
    Filaments adnate to the corolla-tube for about 1/3–1/2 their length; free part dilated, deltoid, glabrous; anthers obtuse.
    Seeds
    Seeds 3-angled, 0.45–0.6 mm. long.
    Habitat
    Damp bare earth; 1000–1800 m.

    Stamens c. 2/3 the length of the petals, adnate to the corolla for 1/3–1/2 their length; filaments shortly connate at the base, free parts either slender or flattened, glabrous; lower part of corolla–tube with conspicuous red granules; anthers 0·15 mm. long.

    Fruit c. 2·5 mm. in diameter, globose, many–seeded, circumscissile.

    Seeds (0·4) 0·45–0·65 mm. long.
