    Annual; stems branching near the base and ascending or sometimes simple and erect, quadrangular, strongly 4-winged, 5–50 cm. long.
    Leaves
    Leaves opposite (or rarely verticillate), sessile, ovate, acute, subcordate at the base, 5–20 mm. long.
    Flowers
    Flowers solitary, axillary, pedicellate; pedicels slender, erect at anthesis becoming longer and recurved in fruit.
    Calyx
    Calyx-segments 5, acute, about equal in length to the corolla-lobes.
    Corolla
    Corolla rotate, up to 15 mm. in diameter; lobes up to as broad as long, apically entire, crenulate or denticulate, fringed with minute stalked glands.
    Stamens
    Filaments bearded; anthers acute.
    Fruits
    Capsules about 5 mm. in diameter.

    Habit
    Tufted annual herb with ascending, branching stems up to 50 cm. long.
    Leaves
    Leaves 6–20 mm. long, opposite and decussate or rarely whorled, sessile, elliptic, ovate or obovate, acute at apex.
    Flowers
    Flowers borne in axils of all but lowermost leaves; pedicels at first short and erect, becoming long and recurved in fruit.
    Calyx
    Calyx–segments c. 4–5 mm. long, lanceolate.
    Corolla
    Petals ± equalling calyx, broadly obovate, connate at the very base, fringed with short–stalked glands, deep blue or red.
    Stamens
    Stamens c. j as long as petals, adnate to base of corolla; filaments free, blue or red, bearded; anthers c. 0–6 mm. long, oblong.
    Fruits
    Capsule 3–5 mm. in diameter, circumscissile, many–seeded; seeds c, 1·2 mm. long.
