Morphology General Habit
Glabrous perennial herb, with a tuberous root ± 4 cm. in diameter, producing 1–2 woody subterranean stems to 2 cm. long; annual stems fleshy, to 8 cm. high, minutely papillose.

Leaves subsessile, forming rosettes at the stem apices, obovate, to 6 × 3 cm., apex rounded, margin entire, lamina red tinged; stipules filamentous, to 3 mm. long, often much reduced.

Cymes on peduncles 4–8 mm. long, 1-forked, much congested at the stem apex to form a globose head ± 3 cm. in diameter.
