Type
Type: Cameroon, Mt Cameroon, Mann 1939 (K!, holo.)
Morphology General Habit
Aromatic annual or short-lived perennial herb, 0.2–1.2(–2) m tall with a single stem arising from a fibrous root system
Morphology Stem
Stems erect, quadrangular, slightly succulent, sparsely branched, pubescent with short retrorse eglandular and often short glandular hairs, rarely with long spreading villose hairs, becoming glandular on the inflorescence axis and with red sessile glands
Morphology Leaves
Leaves spreading, petiolate; blades 2–6(–10) × 1–5(–8) cm, narrowly ovate to trullate, rarely cordate, serrate to crenate, weakly revolute, apex acute, base cuneate, attenuate to decurrent at petiole, puberulent to pubescent, rarely villose, and with red sessile glands; petioles 1–4(–5) cm long
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescence lax with 10–25-flowered verticils 10–25 mm apart; cymes 5–13-flowered, pedunculate, with the first branch dichasial producing 2 lateral cincinni up to 30 mm long; peduncles (1–)3–10(–20) mm long; bracts ovate, ± 4 mm long, erect and cucullate above enclosing young cymes, soon becoming deflexed and deciduous; pedicels 3–4 mm long
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Flowering calyx 2 mm long, sparsely pubescent, more rarely villose, with red sessile glands; fruiting calyx 4–5 mm long, held at right-angles to the pedicel, shortly tubular, slightly curved, with pedicel attached excentrically behind the posterior lip; throat truncate; posterior lip ovate, curving upwards, shortly decurrent; lobes of anterior lip lanceolate, median longer than lateral
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Corolla pale blue or mauve, marked darker, 8–14 mm long, sparsely hairy and with red sessile glands on lobes; tube 3–5 mm long, sigmoid; posterior lip shorter than anterior; anterior lip 5–9 mm long, horizontal, cucullate, enclosing stamens
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens
Staminal filaments fused at base
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Nutlets dark brown with reddish gland dots and longitudinal veins on dorsal surface, ovoid, 1 mm long, producing speckled mucilage.
Ecology
Grassy edge of swamp, elsewhere at forest margins, rocky areas; 1800 m (1400–2050 m further south)
Conservation
Least concern; widely distributed
Note
A related species P. welwitschii (Briq.) Codd ( Coleus frederici G. Taylor) from Angola, but also found in cultivation, differs from P. tenuicaulis in leaf margin (dentate), longer pedicels (4–8 mm), larger anterior lip of the corolla (10–12 mm long) and narrower posterior lip of calyx (narrowly elliptic) and longer fruiting calyx (6–7 mm). A variable species, the larger and smaller forms of which were recognised as P. peulhorum and P. tenuicaulis in the Flora of West Tropical Africa. Similar variation is seen in southern tropical Africa, smaller habits and flowers occuring in the east of the range. However, there is no clear discontinuity in form. Some specimens from around Huila in Angola have a downy, villose indumentum.
Distribution
Range: Nigeria, Cameroon, Angola, Zambia and Malawi Flora districts: T4
