Conservation
Least Concern (LC).
Distribution
Guinee, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea (Bioko), Cameroon, Gabon.
Ecology
This species usually grows on wet rocks beside streams and rivers in forest understorey, on damp, shady rockfaces or occasionally as an epiphyte; 400 - 2000 m. Preuss' collecting notes, repeated in the protologue, state 'an Steinen und auch epiphytisch' (on stones and also epiphytic).
Note
The epithet epilithicus, Latinised Greek for 'upon rocks', alludes to the species' preferred habitat. A new name was necessary since both Plectranthus repens and P. carnosus are already occupied by Nathaniel Wallich's P. repens and J. E. Smith's P. carnosus respectively. The epithet lamiifolius is at varietal rank and so does not take priority at specific rank. Although it is available, an epithet which gives some indication of the ecological preference of this species was preferred instead. Although many of Preuss' duplicates are at K, there is no K isotype for Coleus repens Gürke, and despite much searching in European and other herbaria, no type material has been found. Therefore the name is neotypified here. Nkeng 88 was collected near the type locality (Paton 1998: 64), but a duplicate could not be traced at K, so Pollard 83 from the nearby Mt Kupe is chosen in its place, as it matches well with other material of the taxon. Chevalier's C. carnosus is, in fact, a later homonym of Justus Carl Hasskarl's 1842 name for a quite different SE Asian species. Neither of these names are conspecific with Smith's Plectranthus carnosus (1814), based originally on Lavandula carnosa L. f.; Smith's name thus prevents the use of the epithet carnosus in this transfer of Solenostemon repens to Plectranthus.
Type
Kamerun, im Urwald westlich von Buea, Preuss 949 (holotype B, presumed †); Cameroon, Mt Kupe, Nyasoso, nature trail above the Government High School, Pollard 83 (neotype K!; isoneotypes KUPE!, WAG! YA!).
