Least Concern (LC).
Distribution
Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea (Bioko), Cameroon, Central African Republic, Gabon, Congo (Kinshasa), Sudan.
Ecology
orest understorey; 200 - 1600 m.
Note
The epithet occidentalis, Latin for 'western', alludes to the predominantly western distribution of this species in Africa. A new name is necessary since both Plectranthus mannii and P. cymosus are already occupied by J. G. Baker's P. mannii and P. cymosus respectively. P. mannii was also described from Mt Cameroon (Baker 1900: 408), based on Mann 1947, but Morton (1963: 460) treated it as a synonym of P. kamerunensis Gürke, a view concurred with here. P. cymosus was described from Madagascar but Hedge (Hedge et al. 1998: 218) treated it as a synonym of P. bojeri (Benth.) Hedge. Although Hooker (loc. cit.) did not cite specimens, Mann 1967, K, was taken by Baker (1900: 422) to be the holotype for Coleus mannii Hook. f., as it was collected by Mann in 1861, has 'Coleus Mannii JDH' inscribed on the collecting label in Hooker's handwriting, and is date-stamped 'Herbarium Hookerianum, 1867'. 'Type' is annotated on the specimen label in Baker's script. This demonstrates that it was almost certainly the only specimen seen by Hooker in his description of the species, which was clearly based on Mann's collections. The only other similarly date-stamped specimen of C. mannii then available to Hooker at K is Mann 1251, which he did not consider to be conspecific, determining it as 'Plectranthus ?'. Mann 1251, K, was the only specimen cited in the protologue of Solenostemon cymosus Baker (1900: 422) and until now has been treated as the holotype of that name, but it consists of two sheets. Sheet 1 is therefore here chosen as the lectotype, and sheet 2 becomes an isolectotype.
Type
Mt Cameroon, Mann 1967 (holotype K!).
