Type
Lectotype, chosen by Ryding, loc. cit. (1999): Ethiopia, Edda Jesus near Dawra Tabor [Debra Tabor], Schimper s.n. (B†, holo.; BM!, lecto., JE!, isolecto.)
Morphology General Habit
Pungently aromatic semi-succulent herb 0.5–1.5 m long, up to 2.5 m if supported by other vegetation
Morphology Stem
Stems quadrangular, ascending, scrambling, often rooting at lower nodes, laxly branched, purplish on inflorescence axis, pubescent with often purplish eglandular hairs and with pale and red sessile glands, sometimes with glandular hairs in the inflorescence
Morphology Leaves
Leaves petiolate, spreading; blades ovate, 2–6 × 1.5–5 cm, serrate, apex acute, base cuneate to attenuate, pubescent, with numerous or few red sessile glands; petiole 3–40 mm long
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescence lax with 4–22-flowered verticils 5–40 mm apart, sometimes young lateral inflorescences with 2–8-flowered verticils, with bracts subtending 2–11-flowered sessile or shortly circinnate cymes; bracts ovate, 3–12 mm long, pubescent, persistent or finally deciduous; pedicels 3–9 mm long, terete or slightly flattened, distally curved
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Calyx 2–3 mm long, pubescent, with red/black sessile glands; fruiting calyx 4–6 mm long, tubular, slightly curved with pedicel attached excentrically behind the posterior lip; throat truncate; posterior lip elliptic, purple, shortly decurrent, slightly curving upwards; anterior lobes lanceolate with the median lobes slightly narrower and longer than the lateral lobes
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Corolla purple or white marked purple, 5.5–14 mm long, glabrous or pubescent with hairs and red sessile glands on lobes; tube 2.5–8 mm long, sigmoid; posterior lip shorter than anterior; anterior lip 2.5–5 mm long, horizontal, concave, enclosing stamens or stamens just exserted
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens
Staminal filaments fused for a very short distance
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Nutlets brown shiny with reddish dots, broadly elliptic in outline, flattened, 1 mm long, producing lots of mucilage speckled on outer surface.
Ecology
Wet areas, streams or clearings in forest; 1500–2400 m
Conservation
Least concern; widely distributed
Note
Most likely to be confused with P. sylvestris, see note following that species. Similar to P. hadiensis which is found in drier more open habitats. Differs from P. hadiensis by having less coarsely toothed leaves, an acute rather than rounded or obtuse leaf apex, shorter corollas and much less glandular stem indumentum. Some specimens have larger flowers, 10–14 as opposed to 5.5–8 mm, with anterior lip 7–8 as opposed to 2.5–5 mm and tube 4–5 as opposed to 2.5–5 mm, however this variation seems not to be correlated with any other character.
