    Habit
    Evergreen trees with lepidote branchlets and petiolate simple coriaceous leaves; stipules present.
    Flowers
    Flowers dioecious, in axillary many-flowered panicles; bracts and bracteoles present. Female flowers: perianth as in the male; ovary of 5 connate carpels; styles connate, short; stigmas 5, thick. Male flowers: androphore with 5 anthers at its apex and with a vestigial style protruding through it.
    Calyx
    Calyx campanulate, 5-lobed.
    Corolla
    Petals absent.
    Fruits
    Ripe carpels woody, indehiscent, keeled along the back, 1-seeded.
    Seeds
    Seeds without endosperm; cotyledons very thick.
