Dryopteridaceae, JP Roux, M Shaffer-Fehre, B Verdcourt. Flora of Tropical East Africa. 2007

Morphology General Habit
Medium to large terrestrial ferns.
Vegetative Multiplication Rhizomes
Rhizomes woody, erect to suberect, with firm linear to lanceolate scales
Morphology Leaves
Blade lanceolate to deltoidpentagonal, simple to 1-pinnate or 2–4 pinnatifid, basal pair of pinnae often developed basiscopically; divisions usually broad with entire or sparingly incised margins, ultimate segments crenate but not aristate. Fronds spaced or tufted, dimorphic; fertile fronds of some species taller than sterile, lamina of blade contracted.
Morphology Leaves Leaf veins
Veins anastomosing, areoles with or without free included veinlets
Morphology Reproductive morphology Sori
Sori mostly round, arranged in open rows, median, or scattered; indusium peltate, reniform or sometimes apparently lacking; sporangia with an annulus of ± 14 cells
Morphology Reproductive morphology Spores
Spores monolete, oval, perispore echinate or tuberculate; indusium peltate, reniform or absent
A finding during the present work was that measuring the lengths of sporangial stalks and number/lengths of trichomes/paraphyses below the capsule affords such a good taxonomic character for separating the taxa, that even their absence from T. angelicifolia is diagnostic. The general process of phylogenetic differentiation has been a simplification of the frond and a correlated anastomosis of the veins (Copeland, Philipp. J. Sci. 2C.: 410 (1907)). Over 200 species tropical in distribution adapted to moist and windless habitats.
