Rhizome erect, massive.

Fronds tufted, large, fertile more open than sterile; stipes and rachis with adaxial groove, discontinuous with grooves of lower order axes; blade pinnately compound, pinnae deeply lobed; venation free, simple or forked ending close to or in margin, both anadromous and catadromous.

Indumentum of ctenitoid hairs present in most species, in some species with pluricellular, curved, rigid, ± acicular hairs, and small short and long unicellular glandular hairs, uniseriate cylindrical hairs and acicular hairs along axes and adaxial lamina
