Succulent perennial with numerous branching stems forming dense cushions c. 25 cm high and 30 cm in diam.

Branches terete, 5–8 mm in diam., with shallow tubercle-teeth 5–10 mm apart, greyish green

Leaves fleshy, c. 1 x 1 mm, quickly deciduous

Spine shields narrowly triangular-oblong, 2–4 x 2.5 mm, decurrent halfway to the flowering eye below; spines single, slender, 7–25 mm long, spreading outwards, the longer ones often slightly recurved; prickles 1–4 mm long, becoming curved
