Morphology General Habit
Perennial herb or shrub 0.6–3 m high; stems several from rootstock, usually erect but sometimes becoming scandent, the young growth rarely pubescent, usually glabrous, often reddish or purple.

Leaves pinnatisect, petiolate, triangular or ovate in outline, 3–14 cm long, 1–9 cm wide, base cuneate to attenuate, apex obtuse and apiculate, segments ovate, irregularly serrate, glabrous or sparsely pubescent on both surfaces, densely glandular-punctate; petiole 20–45 mm long.

Capitula in lax corymbose cymes; stalks of individual capitula to 9 cm long; involucre 6–9 mm long; outer phyllaries reflexed at anthesis, glabrous or pubescent, the inner erect, pale orange, glabrous or pilose; paleae white with 10 brown lines, pilose.
