Perennial herb or shrub, 0.6–2 m high; stem solitary or several, branched near apex, pubescent.

Leaves opposite or rarely ternate, oblong-lanceolate to elliptic, 6–19 cm long, 1.5–5 cm wide, base cuneate to cordate, margins coarsely and irregularly serrate with thickened teeth, rarely lobed or bilobed at base, apex attenuate, glabrous or hispid-pubescent; sessile or with petiole to 15 mm long.

Capitula terminal, solitary or few in corymbose cymes; stalks of individual capitula 5–50(–190, fide, EA) mm long; involucre 12–30 mm long; outer phyllaries 9–13, green, pubescent and inner phyllaries 8–10, pubescent or glabrous; paleae light brown, striped, 5–7.5 mm long.
