Type
Type: Cameroon, Cameroon mountains, Mann s.n. (K!, lecto.; P, iso.) .
Morphology General Habit
Epiphyte, growing on trees, rarely on rocks; stems creeping, rooting at the nodes, usually branched, up to 2 m in length and 1.2 cm in diameter, becoming woody with age.
Morphology General Indumentum
Indumentum of translucent sessile peltate-helicoid scales with a dentate margin, the margin frequently curling under in herbarium specimens and appearing entire; hairs on young organs (e.g new leaves, bracts) almost stellate.
Morphology Leaves Stipules
Stipules up to 5.5 cm long, caducous, narrowly ovate to narrowly triangular, boat-shaped, keeled, apex acute to obtuse, almost glabrous to densely indumented.
Morphology Leaves
Leaves thick and fleshy, broadly falcate to obliquely fan-shaped, (3.5–)9–15(–22) × (1.8–)4–11(–19) cm, base cuneate, margin entire, apex acuminate, rarely broadly denticulate (with minute teeth extending from lateral veins), when young densely covered in minute translucent scales, glabrescent with age; venation reddish beneath, palmate-pinnate; petiole 1–5.5 cm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescence axillary, bisexual, the axes reduced, manyflowered; peduncle (0.5–)1.2–5.3(–7) cm long; bracts 2, persistent, subtending and enveloping the inflorescence, boat-shaped, overlapping, 1.5–2.4(–3) cm long, chartaceous, membranous at the margin; bracteoles absent.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers
Female flowers: tepals 2, white, similar to male flowers in dimension; ovary shortly stipitate, obovoid, without wings, 4-locular; placentation pseudo-axillary; styles 4, forked at the apex, spirally twisted once, covered all over with minute yellow stigmatic papillae. Male and female flowers with only the free portion of the tepals exserted from the bracts, the base of the tepals fused to form a perianth cylinder up to 12 mm long. Male flowers: tepals 2,  white with longitudinal pink striations, broadly elliptic to orbicular, (0.4–)1.2–3.2 × (0.3–)1–2.8 cm; stamens 10–45, filaments free or fused only at the base; anthers oblong, ± 2.5 mm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Fruits developing within the bracts, mature fruits greenish-white often tinged with dark pink on the upper part, fleshy, baccate, obovoid, 0.8–2.3 cm long, 4–5-grooved, apiculate, indehiscent.
Ecology
Moist forest; 1250–1900 m.
Conservation
Least concern (LC); widespread .
Note
Easily identified by the characteristic falcate or fan-shaped leaves. One of two species possessing large boat-shaped bracts enveloping the inflorescence (see B. ampla). .
